thank you for sharing your words and photos with us. i came across this while looking up the "Decolonize Wall Street" posters on google, as i've seen a few scattered all over the city of Chicago, where I live. i enjoy your posts very much. keep inspiring and bringing light in to the lives of others with what you create. it's greatly appreciated.

Hey,

Is there any chance we could use 'Don’t Think of an Elephant Across the Street' as a blory? We think this is amazing and exactly the kind of writing we want to help promote. Either way: great piece.

Please send your eloquent thoughts that I just read to our local Oakland and San Francisco newspaper opinion sections. They should be printed to a greater audience where they will find a positive response among thoughtful readers.

"Although the Quan letter in support of the strike was a fake..."

As if, she's the only one who's not allowed to be confused right now?

Thank you Eric To the point and eloquent. Brings back the movement to the 99%. Out actions take place locally - but they are addressed to our federal government.

The fix is in. The person who wrote the letter from the Police Department is already on the payroll of the next mayor. You passionate and intelligent letter is good and all, but remember that politics is dirty business. The sharks are attracted to the cripple Quan. Other candidates will support her recall.

Things are about to get really gross in Oakland politics....

@Sundari: I agree in the abstract, but not in this specific case. That wasn't all he had said. And he made it clear that he was using "police" not to mean individuals, but the department. I.e. the system that has allowed police violence to thrive. It helped that, he took a term made famous by a rap song which makes that point. I see it as balanced finely on the line, but it felt appropriate to me.

@AC I agree with you, I'll keep your words in mind next time I go. But I left because it was likely I was going to have to wait at least 1 or 2 hours (possibly 3 or more judging from watching the live feed at home) before getting a chance to speak. They were in the process of shifting to preparations for the general assembly, to resume Speak Out afterwards. Thanks for the reminder, for next time.

Although I have not attended any Occupy Oakland General Assemblies, my understanding of the protocol is that any/all can speak; the sole requirement being that you stand in line and wait your turn.
Unfortunately, it would appear, these out of touch peddlers of old "up the revolution" rhetoric were willing to put in the effort to reach the platform and make their pitch for rousing the rabble.
I'm sorry to hear you say your choice was to leave after hearing them. Much more useful would have been to stand on line and make the cogent (and, IMHO, correct) counter-argument you offer here AT the Assembly.
Since this true grass-roots effort has caught fire so dramatically, there's a real rush of opportunists scrambling to jump in front of the parade and "lead".
It seems to me one of the things which has made the Occupy movement resonate so effectively with many diverse members of the 99% has been the consistent and unwavering insistence on avoiding the "Old Leftie" rhetoric and world view that is so off-putting to folks outside the core group of "true believers".
If people who understand this allow the conversation to be hijacked and dominated by the usual cohort of bandanna-wearing, Starbucks-smashing anarchist shit disturbers a real opportunity to foster much needed conversation will have been lost.
Don't walk away when the discussion turns sour. Stand and make the case for a broader, inclusive movement. It matters.
